This is a book in English studying the development of disciplines and
branches of knowledge relating to Qur`anic studies. It touches upon the
contributions of Muslim scholars in this field right from the start of
the Prophetic era, and over the fourteen centuries of the Islamic
calendar. Throughout these periods, the development of the exegesis (the
tafsir tradition) reflects a wide variety of methods, presuppositions,
focuses of interest and substantive conclusions. Biographies of selected
Mufassirun and their approaches to the Qur`an are also discussed for
the purpose of understanding their comprehensive worldview in the field
